Polluted air - we tend to think of it as something from outside. Sure enough when you walk out of the door you're exposed to carbon dioxide, smog, haze, much more nowadays, ten 100 years ago when cars were just invented. While outside air is definitely polluted, you'll be surprised to find out the air inside your own house might not be much cleaner.

While the new energy-efficiency rules mean newly built houses are airtight and energy bills are lower, this is not a perfectly good situation. More often than not the modern person forgets to open the window to let fresh air in, and chooses to turn on the air con instead. This can lead to the build-up of dust, mould, pet dander, dust mites, and chemicals without us even suspecting it.

To avoid polluted air at home you need to dedicate time for maintenance and cleaning, as well as make informed choices in your everyday life.

Here are some ideas on how to ensure the quality of air in your home:

Clean, clean, clean

You don't need to be Monica Geller but you do need to keep it clean, if you want fresh air at home. Vacuum the carpets and rugs at least once a week with, and if possible opt for hard floors, rather than carpets. Clean your bedding and drapes regularly, especially if you have pets. We do recommend cleaning them on high temperature as well.

Air exchange ventilator

We don't hear much of them but air exchange ventilators can massively improve the quality of air in your house in less than a year. Don't forget to keep the exhaust fans at your home clean as well, as they will prevent heavy, humid air from remaining in the house.

Call a professional

The best way to know your appliances are not emitting dangerous gases, and are working to their best is to call an engineer (Gas or Electrical, depending on the appliances) to do an inspection before the cold winter hits. Our engineers can always help with a gas safetyor electrical safety check.

Know if your house is humid or dry

If you want to maintain the air humidity in your house at a healthy level (dry and humid air are equally dangerous) you can invest in a hygrometer. Once you have the correct information, you can take actions accordingly.

Less burning.

We know that candles smell amazing, and actual wood fire is so cosy but don't overdo it. The fragrance in your scented candle might not be all that good for you.

Open the windows

It might be the simplest solution but we often forget to do it. We either don't want the warm air in during the summer, or the cold air in during the winter. Both of those are good for the quality of air you inhale though, and even a 10 minute"refreshing session"can help turn around the air.
