How to choose the best boiler for your home?

The best boiler for your home will depend on the size of your household, your needs, the number of bathrooms and of course, the brand you choose.

Your boiler is probably the hardest working appliance in your home and it makes sense that when it comes to replacing it you'll be looking for the best options, which are a combination of affordability and lasting quality.

There are three main types of household boilers in the UK:

Let's start with the combi boiler.

A combi boiler is perfect for small spaces, as it doesn't need a large storage tank. The combi boiler heats water on demand directly from the boiler. The best thing is combi boilers are cheaper and easier to install, so they'll save you money from the very beginning.

The next type is conventional, or standard boiler.

They require a cold water tank in the loft and a hot water cylinder in the house, therefore taking more space. They're generally a good choice for bigger houses with three or more bathrooms, where hot water might be needed simultaneously.

The last type of boiler we're looking at, is sealed system boiler.

The heating and hot water components are build into the boiler and it doesn't require a separate cold water tank. However, with system boilers you don't get hot water instantly and it can run out.

Which type is best for your house?

There is no easy answer, as it largely depends on the situation. However, if your property is a small flat or 1/2 bedroom house with a single bathroom, a combi boiler will be perfect for you.

If you live in a larger property where two or more people might be taking shower at the same time, you probably don't want a combi boiler, which only produces hot water on demand and does not have a water storage. However, for a two bathroom property a higher capacity powerful combi would still be a good choice.

For a larger, detached house or bungalow with several bathrooms a conventional boiler will probably be the smartest choice, although there are high capacity storage combi boilers, with a built-in hot water tank, which could be perfect for the job.

Once you've chosen your boiler type, it's time to shop for a brand.

Worcester Bosch are generally considered the leaders on the market, offering a large variety of boiler, suitable for any home. Their warranty is generous, and adding a Worcester Bosch system filter to your boiler, will generally add another year on top of your warranty.

The second national favourite are Ideal boilers. They have experienced a growth in the last few years, and their warranty is easy and simple to understand.

If, however you're on the lookout for a cheaper boiler brand, Glow Worm might just tick all the right boxes, remaining a cost effective solution.

We hope we managed to help you choose your new boiler today. Don't forget Rightio has negotiated deals with suppliers such as Worcester Bosch, Ideal and Glow Worm, allowing us to pass the savings to you.
