Home safety hazards and how to prevent them

Home safety is a major concern for new homeowners, the elderly and parents of young children. We've created this helpful checklist of safety hazards.

Home is the place where we feel most secure and safe, yet even there dangers could be hiding around the corner.

According to statistics over 40% of all non-fatal injuries that occur at home, and 1/5 older adults who fall sustain a broken bone or head injury.

We never think about potential hazards at home, until one occurs. Taking the time to actively search for them and secure our homes can save money, stress and in some cases, even lives.

Here are some common health and safety hazards at home and how to avoid them.

Trip and Slip

Always make sure to clear toys, and teach your kids to put them in special basket, if needed.

Make sure your stairs have hand railings. Your safety is more important than some current interior design trend.

Be aware of pets, however difficult that is. Pets have a way of sneaking between our legs, which can easily cause more harm than expected.

Add rugs and non-slip stickers in your bathroom and every other surface that could hide the risk of slipping.

In case of bad weather, make sure to clear the steps of snow, ice and any potentially slippery debris.

Fire Hazard

Never leave candles unattended, close to curtains, and supervise any children and pets around them.

Have your electrical wiring tested regularly to prevent electrical fires. Book a qualified Rightio engineer

Invest in a fire extinguisher and keep it in the kitchen, since most fires start there.

Unplug appliances when you're not using them. Overheated devices can cause fires.

If you smoke inside or nearby your house make sure to douse your cigarette every time. Many fires have started from forgotten cigarette butts.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Start by installing a CO2 detector and test the batteries often.

Keep your vents and fireplaces clear and clean and check that the fireplace flue is working properly.

While there are many household risks that we cannot always predict, it's worth taking the time to secure at least the hazards we are aware of.
