Another "Beast from the East" could be heading our way as early as the third week of 2019.

The Met office experts have confirmed that a phenomenon known as sudden stratospheric warming, which is associated with periods of extremely cold weather, is currently taking place high in the stratosphere above the Arctic.

This was exactly the reason the "Beast from the East" swept across England in the early 2018, bringing freezing temperatures and snow storms.

While snow might not necessarily be on the map in the nearest future, a spell of cold weather will slowly spread through the UK, even reaching the southern parts of the country, according to forecasters from the Met Office.

The news is not a complete surprise, as last year temperatures hit their lowest January levels in the first week of 2018- with Nottingham recording -2°C on the 20th January, Portsmouth and London -3°C on the 30thJanuary and Plymouth reaching as low as -4°C on the same date.

On the 21st January 2018, there was travel disruption across the east of England and the Midlands with some roads closed due to snow. East Midlands Airport was closed for a time and Stansted Airport was also affected. Three days later heavy rain caused railway signalling issues between Linlithgow and Edinburgh, and a landslide in Dumfries & Galloway.

For the first month of 2019, Met Office experts say: "There is then a greater than normal chance of a change to much colder weather occurring during this period, with an increasing likelihood of frost, fog and snow."

It is clear that the Met Office is bracing itself for the Beast from the East's number 2 - and you shouldn't be far behind.
